How To Bypass Content Filters And Access Blocked Websites With A Proxy
Unblock your favorite websites bypassing censorship and navigate anonymously with these lists of free public proxy servers.
In addition of the method described in the last article to avoid censorship by using a customized DNS configuration, you can also use proxy servers.
What is a proxy?
A proxy is a service that acts as an intermediary between a user’s computer (client) and the computer serving the contents (server).
The clients asks for some information to the proxy and then the proxy repeats the same petition to the server that has the information. After that, the server replies to the proxy and then the proxy sends the reply to the client.
Common proxy types
There are other proxy types besides the ones you see in this list but a regular user will see these more often :
“Gateway” between two independent networks : The private corporate networks are usually connected to Internet with a proxy.
Open proxy : These proxy servers are accessible by any Internet user.
CGI proxy : This type of proxy doesn’t require any system or browser configuration. To use this service the user only has to type the target address in a form inside the proxy’s web page and the contents will be shown inside that web page.
Suffix proxy : This type of proxy doesn’t require any special configuration either. The user only has to add the target address as a subdomain of the proxy’s address. For example, if the proxy is located in http://example.com and the target address is http://www.briskbard.com then you would have to visit the address http://www.briskbard.com.example.com
Usage of these proxies
The proxy servers that connect two independent networks may be used for :
Adding security measures to the internal network, especially if it’s combined with a firewall.
Filtering inappropriate contents to the internal network’s users.
Logging all the web addresses visited by the users.
Using a cache to store a copy of all the resources accessed by the users.
Accelerate Internet access by using the cached resources.
Saving money accessing Internet by using the cached resources.
The CGI, suffix and open proxies may be used for :
Accessing blocked or censored websites.
Accessing websites anonymously.
Accessing geographically locked contents.
BriskBard users can configure the proxy servers following the step-by-step guide found in the FAQ section.
The proxy servers have access to all the information passing through them and they may be used to log personal information from its users. As a precaution, the users should avoid giving any personal information when they use a proxy server.
Proxy servers list
There are thousands of free proxy servers in Internet so it’s impossible to add them all in this article but there are several web pages that keep an updated list of some of them.
Some of these websites use this classification of proxy servers :
Transparent – The target server knows your IP address and it knows that you are connecting via a proxy server.
Anonymous – The target server doesn’t know your IP address, but it knows that you're using a proxy.
Elite – The target server doesn’t know your IP address, or that the request is relayed through a proxy server.
